A 16-year-old Queens resident has been ordered held without bail after being charged in the death of a 13-year-old boy. The incident took place Monday morning outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in Springfield Gardens.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jaysohn Sykes, who goes by the nickname “Flex.” He turned himself in at the 105th Precinct in Queens Village on Friday, September 26th and was arraigned the next day. Sykes faces second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges.

The victim, Sanjay Samuel, was rushed to Cohen Children’s Medical Center following the shooting. He was placed on life support but died from his injuries on Wednesday.

Sykes, a student at Campus Magnet High School in Cambria Heights, could receive a sentence of 25 years to life if convicted. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 29. Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of the case and the impact of gun violence on local youth.
