Federal agents raided adult daycare centers across New York City this week as part of a sweeping investigation into suspected Medicaid fraud involving services for older adults.
The coordinated operation on Tuesday, October 20th, targeted locations in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. Investigators from the FBI and other federal and state agencies are examining allegations of improper billing, kickbacks, money laundering and claims for services that were never provided.Â
The FBI said an audit found that approximately $2.4 billion in Medicaid funds went toward New York’s Social Adult Day Care program between January 2019 and October 2024.Â
More than 100 providers have been referred for investigation, according to state officials.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the crackdown followed a months-long investigation aimed at protecting taxpayer dollars.
The investigation raises concerns about accountability in programs serving approximately 45,000 Medicaid members statewide. Authorities have not established wrongdoing by every center searched, and the investigation remains ongoing.
