Two students were found with loaded firearms at separate New York City Public Schools on Monday morning, authorities reported.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., a 17-year-old at Harlem Renaissance High School in East Harlem was discovered carrying a gun hidden in his waistband. The teen, who was already under investigation by the NYPD for a reckless endangerment complaint, was taken into custody and is facing charges of criminal possession of a firearm.

Less than an hour later, a 15-year-old was apprehended at Long Island City High School in Queens after a fight in the cafeteria led a school safety agent to find a loaded 9mm gun. The student was also taken into custody, with criminal possession of a weapon charges pending. No injuries were reported in either incident.

Both schools do not have metal detectors. City officials emphasized that scanners and metal detection are managed by the NYPD’s School Safety Division, and principals may request them through a multi-step approval process involving school committees, staff, parents, and borough safety directors.

A spokesperson for NYC Schools stated, “This incident is a deeply concerning example of the proliferation of guns in our society. Weapons have absolutely no place in our schools, or our city,” emphasizing that the weapon was quickly recovered by the NYPD and that all students and staff remained safe.
