Ticker Tape Parade Announced to Honor New York Liberty’s First WNBA Championship

On Sunday, October 20th, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city will host a ticker tape parade to celebrate the New York Liberty’s first-ever WNBA championship. After 28 seasons, the Liberty captured the title with a hard-fought 67-62 victory in Game 5 against the Minnesota Lynx. The parade will take place in the iconic Canyon of Heroes, paying tribute to the team’s remarkable accomplishment. The parade will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 10 am.

The celebration goes beyond the parade. Mayor Adams also announced that several city buildings would be lit in seafoam green on Monday night to mark the occasion. “From the start of the season to the very last game, the New York Liberty were focused on one singular objective: winning. Tonight, they delivered a historic win—making our great city proud by becoming champions,” Mayor Adams said. “To our WNBA champions, thank you for being a role model to our city, and showcasing the values of grit, determination, and hard work.”

Keia Clarke, CEO of the New York Liberty, highlighted the significance of the victory, stating, “This moment means everything — not only to the Liberty organization, but to our fans and all of New York City. The Liberty have been chasing this dream since 1997 and after a strategic five-year turnaround…— we are proud to get back to first and win this championship for New York.”

The Liberty’s win was powered by Finals MVP Jonquel Jones, who contributed 17 points in the final game. Liberty forward Breanna Stewart expressed, “To be able to bring a championship to New York – first ever in franchise history – it’s an incredible feeling, and I literally can’t wait to continue to celebrate with the city,”

This championship represents a milestone for the New York Liberty and the WNBA. The 2024 season saw record-breaking attendance and television ratings, cementing the Liberty’s triumph as a defining moment in the sport’s history. As New York gears up for the celebration, this victory is set to leave an enduring legacy in the city’s sports culture.
