Andrew Cuomo has secured a major endorsement from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, giving his campaign added momentum as the Democratic primary nears on June 24.

Bloomberg, a long-serving mayor and influential political figure, threw his support behind Cuomo, citing his deep experience in leadership and public administration. Bloomberg emphasized that Cuomo stands out among the candidates for his command of government operations and ability to manage during crises.

Cuomo expressed gratitude for the endorsement, calling Bloomberg a defining figure in New Yorkโ€™s recent history. He praised Bloombergโ€™s efforts in rebuilding the city after 9/11 and commended his work on fiscal responsibility, housing, and sustainability. Cuomo noted that the city ran smoothly under Bloombergโ€™s leadership.

Financial backing has also followed the endorsement. Contributions have come from people close to Bloomberg, including his daughter Emma and former strategist Kevin Sheekey. Bloomberg L.P. co-founder Thomas Secunda gave $40,000 to a super PAC supporting Cuomoโ€™s campaign.

Though the two politicians have had tensions in the past, both have acknowledged each otherโ€™s strengths in navigating complex city issues. Bloomberg said their past disagreements do not overshadow Cuomoโ€™s qualifications.

Cuomo framed the endorsement as proof that strong executive experience is essential at City Hall, suggesting that recent administrations lacked the expertise to lead effectively.

The mayoral contest is becoming increasingly competitive, with Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani gaining support from progressive voters. Mamdaniโ€™s team dismissed Bloombergโ€™s endorsement, calling it a sign of wealthy interests trying to preserve the political status quo.

Despite that criticism, Cuomo remains ahead in the polls, buoyed by labor endorsements and Bloombergโ€™s support, which could sway more centrist voters in his favor.
