New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on federal charges, according to a report released by the New York Times on Wednesday, September 25th. At the time of reporting, the indictment is sealed.

Last November, the FBI seized Adams’ devices, including his phones and laptops. The seizure of devices followed the raid of Brianna Suggs, his chief fundraiser for his mayoral campaign.

Over the past few months, several members of his administration – including former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, current New York City Public Schools Chancellor David Banks, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, and current NYPD Commissioner Tom Donlon – have all had their devices seized by federal authorities.

There is speculation that the investigation from November was in regard to campaign finances, with foreign governments suspected of contributing to Mayor Adams’ campaign. The most recent seizure of devices is suspected to be related to fraud, corruption, and bribery.

This indictment makes Adams the first sitting mayor to face criminal charges. If Mayor Adams resigns, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams will become the acting mayor.
