Mamdani Releases 170,000 Pages of 9/11 Files Showing Officials Knew Air Was Dangerous

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration released more than 170,000 pages of previously unavailable city records Tuesday detailing the government’s response to the September 11th attacks, particularly concerns over toxic air and health risks around Ground Zero.

The release comes just days before the 25th anniversary of the attacks and follows a years-long legal battle brought by 9/11 Health Watch seeking access to the records.

The city also settled two lawsuits as part of the disclosure.

The records include the closely watched “Harding Memo,” 68 boxes of documents discovered in 2025, records from former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s administration and materials concerning 7 World Trade Center.

The documents reportedly show that city officials were aware of serious concerns about asbestos and other hazardous materials while publicly reassuring New Yorkers about air quality.

Mamdani said the records demonstrate the need for greater transparency and accountability, arguing that survivors, first responders and families should not have had to fight for decades to obtain information about the health dangers they faced.

The city has committed $34 million to establish and maintain a public 9/11 records portal. Officials said additional documents will be reviewed and released over the next year, with personally identifying information removed.
