Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been arrested and charged with drug trafficking, money laundering and other offenses in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged international drug trafficking activities.
Howard-Taylor was detained Wednesday at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia while attempting to leave Liberia. She was subsequently taken to the headquarters of the Liberia National Police, where she remained in custody. Her lawyer confirmed her detention and said the legal team would proceed once formal charges were presented.
The charges include alleged unlicensed importation, sale, distribution and transportation of controlled substances, criminal solicitation, facilitation, conspiracy and money laundering. Howard-Taylor has not publicly commented on the allegations.
She served as Liberia’s vice president under former President George Weah from 2018 to 2024. The investigation follows a major cocaine seizure valued at approximately $317 million, although authorities have not said the seizure and Howard-Taylor’s case are directly connected.
The case is expected to proceed through Liberia’s legal system.
