A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia Wednesday after a violent incident in the cockpit raised fears that the aircraft was being hijacked.
Flight FZ1073 was carrying passengers from Dubai to Israel when one of the pilots allegedly attacked the other pilot with a knife and attempted to take control of the aircraft. Israeli officials said the aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent of more than 14,000 feet, prompting an emergency signal associated with possible unlawful interference.
Passengers and crew members intervened as the situation unfolded. According to Israeli officials, passengers, including off-duty pilots traveling aboard the aircraft, helped subdue the attacker and prevent further interference with the flight controls.
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The two pilots were reportedly injured and hospitalized, while Saudi authorities took the pilot accused of the attack into custody.
The incident prompted Israeli authorities to scramble fighter jets after officials initially feared the aircraft may have been hijacked. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the passengers and crew members who intervened and helped prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.
The passengers remained at Tabuk Airport while Flydubai arranged another aircraft to complete their journey. After several hours in Saudi Arabia, the passengers were safely flown from Tabuk to Israel aboard a replacement Flydubai aircraft.
The replacement flight allowed the passengers to continue their original journey to Ben Gurion International Airport after the dramatic interruption. All passengers and crew members were ultimately accounted for.
The incident is now under investigation by Saudi and Israeli authorities. Officials are examining what led to the confrontation between the pilots and whether the attack was intended to take control of the aircraft.
Israeli officials have described the incident as an attempted hijacking or attack, while Flydubai has characterized the event as an altercation on the flight deck and cautioned against speculation while authorities investigate.
The motive of the pilot accused of attacking the captain has not been fully established publicly.
Despite the frightening incident, the aircraft landed safely, passengers were protected from further danger, and they were able to continue their journey from Saudi Arabia to their intended destination in Israel on a replacement flight.
