Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a Durban-born South African jurist who helped defend Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong efforts to promote peace, human rights and international law.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday, October 9th, recognizing Pillay’s exceptional contributions to international justice and efforts to ensure accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Born in Durban in 1941 to a family of Indian Tamil descent, Pillay grew up under apartheid, experiencing the racial discrimination that shaped her commitment to equality and justice.

She became a lawyer during a period when opportunities for Black South Africans, particularly women, were severely restricted.

In 1967, she established her own law practice in Natal Province, defending political prisoners and anti-apartheid activists, including Mandela and others who challenged white minority rule.

Her legal career later took her onto the international stage.

In 1995, she became the first Black woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court, breaking a major racial and gender barrier in the country’s judiciary.

Pillay subsequently served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she helped establish a landmark legal precedent recognizing that rape and sexual violence could constitute acts of genocide under certain circumstances.

From 2008 to 2014, she served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, advocating for vulnerable populations and accountability for human rights violations.

She also chaired a UN commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel from 2021 to 2025.

The Nobel Committee praised Pillay’s courage, integrity and contribution to strengthening international law, emphasizing that lasting peace depends on justice and respect for legal principles.

Her achievement is a historic milestone for South Africa. She becomes the country’s fifth Nobel Peace Prize recipient and its first woman to receive the honor.

For Durban, her hometown, Pillay’s recognition celebrates a remarkable journey from confronting apartheid at home to helping shape international justice.
