An open letter from Catholic League President Bill Donohue and an online petition from 9/11 family members is urging New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani not to attend this year’s September 11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero.
The letter, published by the Catholic League, asks the mayor to step aside from the annual remembrance event, arguing that the ceremony should remain focused on honoring the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks and supporting their families.Â
The request has also been promoted through an online petition created by supporters who say they want the anniversary ceremony to be centered on the victims and their loved ones.Â
Supporters of the letter have criticized past statements and policy positions associated with Mamdani, saying they believe his presence would be upsetting for some victims’ families.Â
Others have defended the mayor’s right to participate, arguing that the ceremony is a public remembrance event for all New Yorkers.
The controversy comes as the city prepares for the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, with officials and residents reflecting on the importance of honoring those who lost their lives and supporting survivors and families.
