New Hampshire Poll Puts AOC Ahead in Potential 2028 Democratic Presidential Race

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

A new University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll suggests Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as the early frontrunner among potential Democratic candidates in the state’s 2028 presidential primary, highlighting a shifting political landscape as speculation about the next White House race begins to intensify.

The survey found Ocasio-Cortez, the New York congresswoman and progressive leader, receiving 22% support from likely Democratic primary voters. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed closely at 21%, while Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly placed third with 11%. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris trailed further behind, signaling a more fragmented Democratic field than in previous polling.

According to the UNH Survey Center, Ocasio-Cortez’s support is strongest among self-described progressives and socialists, while Buttigieg draws backing from a broader coalition of progressives, liberals, and moderates. The findings suggest ideological divisions within the Democratic electorate could shape the early stages of the nomination contest.

Political analysts caution that the poll reflects a very early snapshot of voter preferences rather than a prediction of the eventual Democratic nominee. No major Democratic candidate has formally launched a 2028 presidential campaign, and voter attitudes are likely to evolve significantly as the election cycle approaches.
