New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Interim Police Commissioner Tom Donlon unveiled the Drone as First Responder (DFR) program to improve emergency response times on Wednesday, November 13th. The initiative integrates drone technology into the NYPD’s operations, with ten new drones deployed across five precincts in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan. These drones, equipped with high-definition cameras and autonomous navigation, will assist in responding to priority incidents such as gunshot alerts, missing person searches, and crimes in progress.

“New York City is flying into the future as we keep New Yorkers safe,” stated Mayor Adams. “This program embodies 21st-century precision policing, reducing response times and enhancing officer safety while serving our communities efficiently.” The drones will provide real-time video feeds accessible to officers and supervisors on mobile devices, offering critical situational awareness before responders arrive on the scene.

NYPD Interim Commissioner Donlon emphasized the program’s transformative impact. “Our DFR program enables highly trained officers to respond faster and smarter. It’s an evolution in how we serve and protect, making our operations more efficient and safer for everyone involved,” he noted.

Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Chauncey Parker, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology. “Every second counts during emergencies. By deploying drones, we ensure first responders have immediate, accurate information, which ultimately makes our communities safer,” Parker said.

The drones also offer versatile capabilities, including search-and-rescue operations, hazardous material assessments, and natural disaster response. In addition to reducing operational costs compared to helicopters, drones enhance transparency by documenting incidents and preserving footage for investigations.

Mayor Adams reinforced the program’s potential, saying, “This is the future of emergency response. These drones represent a commitment to innovation and safety for all New Yorkers.” With over 100 drones and 110 FAA-certified pilots, the NYPD has already completed 4,000 missions in the past year, demonstrating the program’s scalability and effectiveness.

The DFR initiative reflects NYC’s continued efforts to adopt cutting-edge solutions to ensure public safety, reduce crime, and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
