Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has reportedly been granted Albanian citizenship through a decree issued by Albanian President Bajram Begaj, according to official publications and multiple media reports. The decree, first reported by Albanian outlets and later cited by U.S. media organizations, states that citizenship was granted after a request submitted by Adams himself.

According to Adams’ spokesperson, the former mayor has maintained longstanding ties with the Albanian-American community, which represents one of the largest diaspora groups in New York City. The spokesperson noted that the recognition reflects “an enduring relationship and mutual respect,” adding that global cities often engage in symbolic citizenship or recognition as part of broader international relations. He also emphasized that Adams viewed the mayor’s office as having international importance, particularly given New York’s role as the host city of the United Nations.

Reports also indicate that Adams visited Albania in 2025 and met with government officials, including Prime Minister Edi Rama, to discuss tourism and business cooperation. He has previously acknowledged the Albanian community in New York, once describing the city as “the Albania of America” due to its large population of Albanian residents.
