Elise Stefanik Ends New York Governor Bid, Will Not Seek Re-Election to Congress

Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York has ended her campaign for Governor and announced she will not seek re-election to Congress, bringing a close to a political career that recently appeared aimed at higher office.

In a post on X, Stefanik explained that continuing in the race was “not an effective use of our time or your generous resources,” citing the prospect of a lengthy Republican primary in a state dominated by Democrats. She added that her decision was driven in part by family considerations, writing, “My most important title is Mom.”

Stefanik had been considered a leading contender for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. Her path narrowed after Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman entered the race and as Hochul maintained a strong polling advantage statewide. New York Republican Party Chair Ed Cox later endorsed Blakeman, urging party leaders to unify behind him.

The decision also follows a series of political setbacks for Stefanik, a close ally of President Donald Trump who has aligned herself closely with his “ultra MAGA” agenda. Trump previously selected her for the post of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, but her nomination was withdrawn earlier this year amid concerns about the GOP’s slim House majority.

After Stefanik announced her decision, Trump praised her on Truth Social, calling her “a tremendous talent, regardless of what she does,” and added that “she will have GREAT success, and I am with her all the way!”

Stefanik, first elected to Congress in 2014, became the youngest woman ever to serve in the House and was once viewed as a rising moderate voice before increasingly aligning herself with Trump-era politics. She confirmed she will serve out the remainder of her term representing New York’s 21st Congressional District. Her departure adds to a growing list of Republicans planning to leave the House, reflecting broader uncertainty within the party as it navigates internal divisions and a challenging electoral landscape in New York.
