NYC Reports 6th Fatality in Recent Harlem Legionnaires’ Outbreak
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The death toll from New York City’s Legionnaires’ disease outbreak has risen to six, with 111 people confirmed sick. Health officials said the latest fatality occurred earlier this month but was only recently linked to the Central Harlem cluster. Seven patients remain hospitalized, down from 14 earlier in the week.

The outbreak has been traced to 12 contaminated cooling towers across 10 northern Manhattan buildings, including hospitals and a city health clinic. All towers have since undergone remediation. Officials say new infections have declined since August 5, suggesting the spread may be slowing.

Despite progress, community leaders, such as Reverend Al Sharpton, and attorneys have announced legal action, accusing the city of lax oversight of cooling tower inspections for the recent outbreak. Governor Kathy Hochul has signaled possible reforms to strengthen regulation.

Health officials continue to urge Harlem residents to seek immediate care if they develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
