Ciattarelli, a Republican who narrowly lost to Governor Phil Murphy in 2021, claimed victory in his primary with strong backing from former President Donald Trump. He has focused on economic issues, particularly property taxes and affordability, while criticizing Democratic fiscal management.
Sherrill, a Democrat and former federal prosecutor, secured her party’s nomination after defeating five challengers. She emphasized experience and practical governance, promoting housing affordability through tools like development tax credits. Her campaign has drawn endorsements from EMILY’s List and influential Democratic organizations in Essex and Middlesex counties.
The general election is expected to be shaped by local economic concerns and national political undercurrents. During her post-primary remarks, Sherrill portrayed Ciattarelli as closely tied to Trump and positioned the race as part of a broader ideological struggle.
