New IDNYC Enrollment Center Opening in the Bronx Amid Surging Demand

On June 24th, the New York City Department of Social Services will open a new IDNYC enrollment center in the Bronx’s Tremont neighborhood at 1910 Monterey Ave. This new center aims to address the increasing demand for IDNYC cards, particularly driven by the influx of migrants who require identification for various essential services.

The new center will increase the number of weekly appointments from 7,100 to 7,500, enhancing access for Bronx residents who need municipal IDs. With this addition, the total number of IDNYC centers citywide will rise to 11, ensuring at least two locations per borough, except for Staten Island, which has one.

IDNYC, the largest municipal ID program in the United States, has issued 1.6 million cards since its inception in 2015. The program serves those who face challenges in obtaining state-issued identification, such as undocumented immigrants, seniors, the homeless, and formerly incarcerated individuals. While a state law passed in 2019 allows undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses, IDNYC remains a widely accepted alternative for various purposes, including employment, library use, housing, and banking.

The new Bronx center comes in response to the closure of many IDNYC locations over the years. In 2017, the Bronx had 10 centers, but that number dwindled, leaving just one. The new center will alleviate the pressure on existing facilities and improve service access.

City Council members representing the Bronx praised the new center’s opening. Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala emphasized the importance of accessible enrollment for all residents, regardless of citizenship status. Council Member Kevin C. Riley highlighted that the new center reflects the city’s commitment to equity and inclusion, providing critical services to vulnerable populations.

Appointments for IDNYC are only available online or by calling 311, as the program switched to an appointment-only model in January 2024. This change aims to streamline the process and prevent long wait times, ensuring efficient service delivery.

The new center is located in the same building as the Benefits Access Center, allowing New Yorkers to apply for additional services like SNAP. The IDNYC card offers numerous benefits, including memberships and discounts to cultural institutions, sporting events, and fitness facilities.
