President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a visa to the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, allowing her to travel from Ghana to New York to attend her son’s funeral and say goodbye in person.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa welcomed Trump’s decision and said the Ghanaian government will assist Frimpong’s mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, with the visa process and cover her travel expenses.
Frimpong was fatally shot Thursday morning while walking to school in the Claremont section of the Bronx.Â
Police said the teenager was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The 15-year-old had moved from Ghana to New York about a year ago to live with his father and begin a new life in the United States.Â
His father said Javits had recently been bullied at school, although police have not established whether the bullying was connected to the shooting.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief throughout the Bronx and New York City’s Ghanaian community.
