An Albany woman has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to attack the New York State Capitol and kill state lawmakers, according to federal prosecutors.
Jessica Bowie, 35, was arrested August 19th following an FBI investigation into an alleged plan to detonate an explosive device at the Capitol.Â
The U.S. Department of Justice said Bowie conducted surveillance of the Capitol, photographed the building and grounds, and discussed carrying out an attack while state senators were in session.
According to court documents, Bowie converted to Islam about five years ago and began using the Muslim name Aisha Saif. Prosecutors allege that she later became radicalized online, pledged allegiance to ISIS and expressed support for terrorist attacks.
Investigators allege Bowie sought help obtaining materials to make explosives. During an undercover operation, FBI agents posing as ISIS supporters provided her with what she believed was an explosive device. Authorities said she took possession of the device before being arrested.
The criminal complaint also alleges that Bowie discussed fleeing to Syria after an attack and identified other potential targets, including the White House and Times Square.Â
Prosecutors further allege she made statements online expressing support for ISIS and past terrorist attacks.
The case has drawn attention in Albany because of the alleged targeting of the State Capitol, where lawmakers conduct state business and debate legislation affecting millions of New Yorkers.
Bowie appeared in federal court following her arrest and was ordered detained pending further proceedings. She faces a federal charge of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, which carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Bowie is presumed innocent unless and until she is found guilty.
