New York City health officials are investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease on Manhattan’s Upper East Side after confirming 28 cases of the illness, including 21 hospitalizations, as of July 7. No deaths have been reported, but the city’s Department of Health is working to identify the source of the bacteria and prevent additional infections.

The outbreak is centered in the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods. Health officials are testing cooling towers in the area, as these systems can harbor Legionella bacteria if they are not properly maintained. The bacteria can spread through tiny water droplets released into the air.

Officials emphasized that the city’s drinking water is safe and that residents can continue using tap water, showering, bathing and operating home air-conditioning units without concern.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People become infected by breathing in contaminated water mist, not through contact with another person. Symptoms usually appear within two to 14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, chills, muscle aches, headaches and shortness of breath. Most people recover with prompt antibiotic treatment, but the illness can be severe for adults over age 50, smokers, people with chronic lung disease and those with weakened immune systems.

The Health Department is advising anyone who lives, works or has recently spent time in ZIP codes 10028, 10128 and 10075 to seek medical care if they develop symptoms, especially if they have underlying health conditions.

Inspectors are continuing to test and disinfect cooling towers throughout the affected area while investigators work to pinpoint the source of the outbreak. City officials say the overall risk to the public remains low but encourage residents to stay alert and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
