AfriForum and the March and March movement have agreed to work together on a range of issues affecting South African communities, following a meeting between the two organizations on Tuesday.
The meeting brought together March and March founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel, along with representatives from both organizations. Discussions focused on shared challenges facing communities, possible solutions and opportunities for cooperation at the grassroots level.
The organizations identified several potential areas of collaboration, including community organization, capacity-building programs designed to improve socioeconomic conditions, mother-tongue education, accessible and effective education, and promoting peaceful coexistence.
They also agreed to jointly pursue legal matters of mutual interest and support one another on issues involving the rule of law and community safety, including concerns surrounding illegal immigration.
For March and March, the relationship also provides an opportunity to draw on AfriForum’s experience as an established civil rights organization. March and March recently launched the SA First Forum, a nonprofit legal advocacy organization intended to help South Africans pursue legal remedies when they believe their rights have been violated. Ngobese-Zuma previously said the group hopes to develop an organization modeled in part on AfriForum, including its community-building and legal work.
As part of the new relationship, AfriForum will provide advice and guidance to the SA First Forum as the new organization develops its structures and initiatives.
Ngobese-Zuma has emphasized that the goal of the SA First Forum is to provide a legal platform for South Africans who cannot afford to protect their rights through the courts.
The two organizations said their cooperation will be based on mutual respect while focusing on practical initiatives intended to benefit communities and citizens.
