A pregnant South African woman was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas after authorities determined she had overstayed her U.S. visa.
Nqobile Malangeni was reportedly arrested by ICE agents while at the airport in late July. According to reports, Malangeni had traveled to Las Vegas to celebrate her birthday. Her fiancé said she was about one month pregnant and that the couple had planned to marry.
ICE officials said the case involved more than a visa overstay. Malangeni reportedly had a final order of removal from the United States.
Following her arrest, she remained in ICE custody at the Henderson Detention Center. Her detention has attracted attention because of her pregnancy and the circumstances surrounding her arrest.
The case serves as a reminder that visitors who remain in the United States beyond the period authorized by their visas can face detention and removal proceedings. Immigration advocates have also raised concerns about how pregnant detainees are treated while in federal custody.
