New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani announced Friday the appointment of two deputy mayors he said will be key to advancing his administration’s affordability agenda, naming Leila Bozorg as Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning and Julie Su as the city’s First Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice.

Mamdani emphasized that the appointments reflect a broader approach to governance focused on affordability, noting he was “so proud to appoint two deputy mayors who will…lead the implementation of that new, more expansive approach to governance.”

Bozorg, currently Executive Director of Housing under Mayor Eric Adams, will tackle the city’s affordability crisis and housing shortage. She is expected to play a central role in Mamdani’s pledges, including freezing rents on over 900,000 apartments and building 200,000 affordable homes. Her experience spans the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the City Planning Commission, and the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Su, who previously served as U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Joseph Biden Jr., is widely known for her ties to organized labor. During her tenure in Washington, she pushed for stronger worker protections, including safeguards for gig economy employees and workplace safety measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.
