LaGuardia Air Canada Crash: Latest Updates from Investigation and Recovery
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Investigators continue to examine the collision between an Air Canada Express plane and a Port Authority fire truck at LaGuardia Airport that killed two pilots and injured dozens of passengers and crew. Authorities have recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, though a full day of on-scene investigation was delayed by travel disruptions caused by the partial U.S. government shutdown. Jennifer Homendy, Chair of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), noted that security lines at other airports slowed the arrival of specialists needed for the investigation.

The runway where the crash occurred remains closed for several days as officials sift through debris and analyze recovered flight recorders. LaGuardia reopened Monday afternoon after nearly 14 hours of closure. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the airport is “very well-staffed,” though the precise staffing of air traffic controllers during the overnight shift is still under review. Audio from air traffic control reveals the controller managing multiple emergencies simultaneously, later admitting, “I messed up.”

Among the survivors, flight attendant Solange Tremblay was ejected from the aircraft while strapped into her seat but survived with multiple fractures on one leg. Her daughter described the survival as a “total miracle.” Both firefighters in the truck were hospitalized; one has been discharged, while the other continues to receive medical care.

Investigators are focusing on coordination between air traffic control and ground vehicles as a central element of the ongoing inquiry. The NTSB, with support from Canadian authorities, continues to gather data to determine how the collision occurred and whether further procedural improvements are needed to prevent similar incidents.
