A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an immigration-related operation in South Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking protests and widespread scrutiny. The victim has been identified as Renee Nicole Good, a mother and resident of the city.

Around 9:30 a.m., the incident unfolded near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. According to federal officials, an ICE agent fired in self-defense after Good allegedly “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them.” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin and Secretary Kristi Noem described the event as an act of domestic terrorism, noting that the officer involved had previously been attacked on duty.

Local officials and witnesses, however, disputed the federal account. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey observed the footage personally and remarked, “Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is b—s—.” Witnesses reported that Good appeared to be attempting to flee when the agent opened fire, and police described her as not being a target of any active law enforcement investigation. Residents noted the ICE operation created tension in the neighborhood, with agents reportedly attempting to block vehicles and engage with the driver.

Good, who had three children, was described by the Minneapolis City Council as “a member of our community… out caring for her neighbors this morning.” Court records indicate she had previously changed her name and resided in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Minneapolis.

Following the shooting, hundreds gathered near the scene, chanting and holding vigils. Demonstrators also assembled at Minneapolis City Hall, prompting city officials and Governor Tim Walz to stress the importance of peaceful and lawful protest. Pepper spray and tear gas were reportedly deployed when some demonstrators threw snowballs at federal officers.

President Donald Trump publicly defended the ICE agent, describing him as “viciously” run over but now recovering in the hospital. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local communities as ICE expands operations in Minneapolis.
