On Sunday, July 13th, a fire at Gabriel House, an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, resulted in the deaths of nine residents and injured more than 30 others. The blaze broke out around 9:30 p.m., prompting an extensive emergency response and an ongoing investigation led by state authorities.

When firefighters arrived at the three-story nonprofit home for the elderly, flames were already engulfing the main entrance. Several residents were seen at windows, calling for help. According to Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon, crews encountered intense flames and significant rescue challenges, including air conditioners blocking windows and oxygen tanks throughout the building.

Roughly 70 people were inside at the time. While the fire was mostly contained to one wing of the living facility, smoke damage spread through the entire structure. One resident remains in critical condition. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries and were later released. Off-duty firefighters and all available city police officers responded to the scene.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the building’s fire alarm or sprinkler systems were working during the incident. The Massachusetts State Police and the State Fire Marshal’s office are leading the investigation.

Governor Maura Healey expressed condolences to the victims’ families and commended first responders for their efforts, stating that her heart breaks for those who received devastating news.

Families seeking updates can contact St. Anne’s Hospital, located nearby, or call 508-674-5741 for assistance.
