On Tuesday, May 6th, Jesse Figueroa, 40, of Monterey Park, was charged in connection with a fatal shooting at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, California. Figueroa, a former security guard at the college, faces one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and two felony counts related to a felon’s possession of firearms due to his previous violent convictions. If convicted, Figueroa could face a life sentence in state prison.
The shooting took place on Friday, at approximately 3:45 p.m. in an office on the Inglewood campus. Dr. Cameisha Denise Clark, recently named dean, and another female employee were both shot. The second victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Figueroa, who had been working as a security guard then, was reportedly dressed in a security uniform during the attack.
After several hours, Figueroa’s car was located in Koreatown, leading to his arrest. Tragically, Dr. Clark died from her injuries on Monday. Her family remembered her as a kind and dedicated educator. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Clark was well known for her leadership and mentoring. “She believed in the potential of others even when they could not yet see it in themselves,” her family shared.
The shooting is being treated as workplace violence, with both victims being staff members of the college. The motive is still under investigation. Following the tragedy, Chris Becker, president of the Inglewood campus, expressed his sorrow and confirmed that counseling services have been set up for students and staff.
“Any student, faculty member, or employee should feel safe and secure going to school,” said District Attorney Nathan Hochman, condemning the attack. “This horrific act of gun violence has shaken Spartan College and our entire community.”
