In a surprising development just days before Election Day, Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens announced Sunday that she is endorsing Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate race.
Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed earlier this year, said her decision came after growing tensions between the two former rivals. In a video announcing her endorsement, Stevens said El-Sayed had made it clear that she was no longer welcome on his campaign.
“That’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today,” Stevens said.
Earlier Sunday, Stevens joined Rogers at a church service in Detroit, drawing attention from voters and political leaders across the state.
Stevens had previously pledged to support El-Sayed after the Democratic primary. However, disagreements over campaign messaging and concerns about issues involving Israel and the Jewish community renewed tensions between the two Democrats in recent days.
El-Sayed responded by keeping his focus on voters and the issues facing Michigan families, including the cost of living.
The endorsement sparked strong criticism from Democratic leaders and highlights the divisions within the party as Michigan voters prepare to choose their next U.S. senator.Â
The race is considered an important contest that could help determine which party controls the Senate.
