Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old Kentucky State University basketball player from Senegal, has won a significant development in her fight against deportation after an immigration judge reopened her case and rescinded the removal order against her.
Seck was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on August 7th at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport while traveling with her teammates to New York. She has remained in federal immigration custody since then.
The Department of Homeland Security previously confirmed that Seck legally entered the United States on Sept. 1, 2019, in Los Angeles, on a temporary basis. DHS said an immigration judge issued a final removal order on Sept. 8, 2025, after she failed to appear at an immigration hearing.
Seck’s attorney subsequently argued that she never received notice of the hearing. The immigration judge agreed to reopen the case, giving Seck an opportunity to contest her removal. A new hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 26, according to the Associated Press.
Despite the rescinded deportation order, Seck remains in ICE custody. Her attorney is seeking her release, while DHS has said she is receiving medical treatment for a knee injury.
Seck was a standout player for Kentucky State last season, earning All-SIAC honors and the conference’s Elite 16 academic award.
