Fadiel Adams was granted R10,000 bail by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Friday after facing charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

Magistrate Wendalyn Robinson ruled that Adams was a suitable candidate for release pending trial, despite concerns raised by the State over his conduct before his arrest. The court ordered Adams to return on August 14 and imposed several strict bail conditions, including reporting twice weekly to Mitchells Plain Police Station and avoiding contact with witnesses, police officers, and members of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Prosecutors allege Adams falsely claimed he was conducting official parliamentary business to gain access to inmates at Westville Prison. Authorities contend he conducted interviews with two awaiting-trial prisoners in November 2024 and January 2025 without authorization from investigators or the inmates’ legal representatives. One of the inmates was linked to the murder case of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

The State further alleged Adams misrepresented himself to police, metro officials, and correctional authorities, which resulted in official escorts being arranged for his prison visits. Prosecutors also argued Adams attempted to evade arrest, citing social media posts and a TikTok video in which he compared himself to fugitive character Harrison Ford portrayed in “The Fugitive.”

In delivering judgment, Robinson acknowledged Adams’s family ties, parliamentary position, and links to South Africa, noting these factors reduced the likelihood that he would abscond.

The magistrate nevertheless criticized Adams’s conduct, remarking that citizens should not undermine the justice system. Robinson also referenced Adams’s previous non-compliance with an Equality Court order linked to derogatory remarks made on social media.
