New York is expanding its free community college program to give more adult New Yorkers a chance to earn a degree and prepare for careers in high-demand industries.
Through the SUNY and CUNY Reconnect programs, eligible New Yorkers ages 25 to 55 can attend participating colleges tuition-free while pursuing approved associate degrees. The program covers tuition, fees, books and supplies, reducing one of the biggest barriers for adults who want to return to school.
The expansion announced by Govenor Kathy Hochul includes additional career fields such as logistics, air traffic control and transportation. It also allows some adults who already have a college degree to pursue a nursing degree through the program.
The initiative is designed for New Yorkers seeking new careers, upgrading their skills or returning to the workforce.
More than 15,000 adults have already benefited from the program since its launch in 2025, according to CUNY.
For older New Yorkers who may have postponed college because of work, family or financial responsibilities, the program provides an opportunity to gain new credentials without taking on the usual cost of community college.
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, including New York residency, age and program-specific requirements.
