Students and families applying for federal financial aid have an earlier start this year as the U.S. Department of Education opened the 2027–2028 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on September 23rd, marking the earliest launch in the program’s history for the second consecutive year. Federal law requires the FAFSA to be available by October 1st, making this year’s September launch several days ahead of the deadline.
The Department says the earlier launch is part of an effort to make the application process more predictable, accessible and easier to navigate. Officials say technical teams conducted early testing and incorporated feedback before the public release.
Among the biggest changes is clearer language throughout the application. Questions and instructions have been rewritten to reduce confusing terminology and make it easier for students and families to understand what information is required.
Students can also invite a parent or other FAFSA contributor by text message, in addition to email. The Department says the updated process is intended to make it easier for contributors to complete their portions of the application.
Another improvement coming later this fall is easier FAFSA renewal. Returning students will have information pre-populated from previous FAFSA applications, reducing the amount of information they have to enter again. The Department estimates that the FAFSA can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.
The 2027–2028 FAFSA also builds on several modern features introduced during the previous cycle. Students can receive real-time information about potential Pell Grant eligibility and other federal financial aid after completing the application. Parents with multiple children applying for aid can reuse their information rather than re-entering it for each child.
The contributor process has also been redesigned. Students can invite parents or other contributors using a simple code, while new StudentAid.gov accounts receive faster verification.
Another feature, the Earnings Indicator, provides students and families with information about whether graduates of colleges and universities they are considering have lower earnings than a typical high-school graduate. The goal is to give students additional information as they consider postsecondary education options.
The Department also says it has strengthened fraud-prevention measures within the FAFSA system. According to the agency, its enhanced detection efforts have helped prevent more than $2 billion in fraudulent federal student aid since January 2025. That figure is a Department of Education claim and reflects the agency’s accounting of its fraud-prevention efforts.
The FAFSA remains a key gateway to federal Pell Grants, federal student loans and work-study, as well as many state and college-based financial aid programs. Students should submit the application as early as possible because colleges and states may establish their own priority deadlines.
The federal deadline for the 2027–2028 FAFSA is June 30, 2028, although students should not wait until the federal deadline if they want to be considered for limited or priority-based aid.
