South Africa is confronting another wave of deadly gun violence after multiple shootings over the weekend left dozens dead and wounded in separate incidents across the country.
In the most deadly attack, 17 people were killed and 15 wounded Saturday night when gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Wedela, on Gauteng’s West Rand, southwest of Johannesburg. Police said as many as eight suspects, some armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, were involved. No arrests had been reported as of Sunday.
In the Western Cape, 10 people were killed and 11 wounded early Sunday when gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Police said five victims died at the scene and five others later died from their injuries.
A separate shooting in Khayelitsha’s Site C Saturday evening left four men dead. Three victims died at the scene and a fourth died after being taken to a medical facility.
The attacks have renewed concerns about illegal firearms, organized crime and violent crime in South Africa. Police investigations and searches for suspects are continuing.
