U.S. Places Visa Restrictions on Some South African Nationals

The United States has announced new visa restrictions on certain South African nationals, adding another point of tension between the two countries.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures Tuesday, saying they would apply to people the U.S. government believes are involved in policies involving racial discrimination, land seizures without compensation or rhetoric that could contribute to violence against minority groups.

The restrictions do not amount to a ban on South Africans traveling to the United States.

Instead, they allow the U.S. government to deny entry to specific foreign nationals who fall under the policy. U.S. officials have not publicly identified the people who may be affected.

The announcement centers partly on South Africa’s land-reform policies. The South African government has argued that land reform is necessary to address inequalities created during apartheid, when the country’s Black majority was denied many property and economic rights.

The issue has become a particularly sensitive one in U.S.-South African relations.

The administration of President Donald Trump has previously accused South Africa of unfairly treating white South Africans, particularly Afrikaners.

South African officials have rejected those accusations and said claims of widespread persecution are misleading.

The latest action comes amid broader disagreements between Washington and Pretoria over foreign policy, trade, aid and South Africa’s approach to international conflicts.

For South Africans living in the United States, the announcement does not by itself change the immigration status of people who already have valid permission to remain in the country. However, individuals seeking visas or entry could be affected if they are determined to fall within the new restrictions.

The U.S. government has not said how many people could ultimately be subject to the measures.

South African officials have called for continued diplomatic engagement as the two countries work through their differences.
