A month-long federal immigration enforcement operation across New York resulted in 2,197 arrests, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Dubbed “Operation Rotten Apple,” the operation ran from July 27th through August 29th and involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducting enforcement actions across New York State. Federal officials described the operation as a public-safety effort targeting people in the country illegally, including individuals with serious criminal histories.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin called the operation a success, saying those arrested included people with records involving murder, rape, kidnapping, drug trafficking and other violent offenses.

Federal officials said the operation removed dangerous individuals from New York communities and criticized Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Hochul disputed the federal characterization of the arrests, saying there was no way all 2,197 people had committed crimes as New York defines them. Mamdani likewise accused ICE of criminalizing immigrants simply because of their immigration status.

The operation has intensified the continuing debate over immigration enforcement, public safety, and New York’s sanctuary policies.
