Trump Administration Suspends Immigrant Visa Appointments at Embassies Worldwide

The latest move comes amid a broader Trump administration effort to tighten immigration screening and enforcement. It also follows a federal judge’s recent ruling overturning an earlier policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries.

The new pause has left applicants and their families waiting for updated interview dates and additional guidance from U.S. consular posts. The Trump administration has temporarily paused or rescheduled immigrant visa appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, creating uncertainty for thousands of people seeking to move to the United States.

The State Department said the adjustment is tied to a global training initiative launched this month for consular officers. The training is intended to strengthen how officers evaluate visa applicants, including whether they are likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits.

Applicants who already had interviews scheduled have received notices that their appointments are being canceled or rescheduled. The State Department has not announced when regular appointment scheduling will resume.

The pause applies to immigrant visa appointments, rather than all U.S. visa categories. Nonimmigrant visas, including those for tourists, students and temporary workers, are not covered by the global immigrant-visa appointment suspension.
