A new U.S.-Liberia arrangement will allow the Trump administration to transfer up to 1,200 illegal migrants to Liberia as part of their expanding effort to deport people to countries other than their own.
Liberian Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah said the first group of 20 deportees is expected to arrive Thursday.
The deportees will come from countries in Africa, North and South America, and the Caribbean.
Liberian officials said those arriving will be medically cleared to travel and will be received as “guests of the Republic.” They will be free to leave Liberia if they choose and may also seek asylum in the country, according to the government.
The agreement is part of a broader U.S. effort to send migrants to countries other than their countries of origin.
Supporters say the arrangements strengthen immigration enforcement, while human-rights advocates have raised concerns about sending people to countries where they may face risks.
The United States will provide assistance to help Liberia manage and strengthen its migration system.
