The Trump administration has revoked more than 175,000 U.S. visas issued to foreign nationals since President Donald Trump returned to office, marking a major escalation in the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.

The State Department said most of the cancellations involved visa holders who came into contact with law enforcement or were accused of criminal activity.

Cases included offenses such as assault, driving under the influence, theft, drug-related crimes and other violations. More serious cases cited by officials included rape, kidnapping, human trafficking and child abuse.

The department has also revoked visas in cases involving alleged immigration violations and national security concerns.

More than 100 visas were canceled in North Africa over allegations of “birth tourism,” in which individuals allegedly traveled to the United States to give birth.

The administration has emphasized that visas are a privilege rather than a right and said it will continue reviewing foreign nationals who may pose a threat to public safety or violate U.S. immigration laws.

The large-scale revocations come as the Trump administration continues to tighten immigration screening, enforcement and visa policies nationwide.
