The Trump administration has announced nearly $2 billion in health and humanitarian assistance for faith-based organizations working to provide services to vulnerable communities around the world.
The U.S. Department of State said the funding represents a major expansion of American support for faith-based groups involved in global health, humanitarian relief and other critical assistance programs.Â
The announcement includes $1.4 billion in global health foreign assistance, described by the department as the largest such commitment to faith-based organizations in more than 20 years.
Faith-based organizations have long played a significant role in delivering health care, food, shelter and other essential services, particularly in areas where government infrastructure is limited. The administration said the funding will help organizations reach populations affected by poverty, disease, conflict and humanitarian emergencies.
The initiative reflects the Trump administration’s broader effort to reshape U.S. foreign assistance while emphasizing partnerships with organizations that have established networks and local connections.
Administration officials said faith-based groups are often able to reach communities that traditional aid programs have difficulty accessing.Â
The funding is expected to support programs addressing urgent health and humanitarian needs while strengthening partnerships between the United States and religious organizations providing assistance overseas.
The State Department described the announcement as a historic investment in faith-based humanitarian work and global health.
