U.S. Missionary Abducted in Niamey Amid Growing Security Concerns

A U.S. missionary was kidnapped Tuesday night in Niger’s capital, Niamey, in the latest abduction targeting foreign nationals in the country. The victim, a man in his 50s, works as a pilot for the evangelical organization Serving in Mission (SIM), which operates in over 70 countries.

Multiple sources reported the abduction occurred in Niamey’s Plateau district, near his home, close to the presidential palace. Three armed men reportedly seized the missionary, overpowering his security before quickly leaving the scene. Tracking of the victim’s phone suggested he had been moved roughly 56 miles north, toward an area associated with armed groups linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, near the Niger-Mali border.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the kidnapping, emphasizing that its embassy in Niamey is taking all possible measures to secure the missionary’s safe return. A spokesperson noted that it is a top priority for the U.S. government to protect American citizens and that efforts are underway across agencies to support the recovery and safe return of the missionary. The embassy has implemented additional security measures, including curfews, armored vehicle requirements, and travel restrictions for personnel.

The incident comes amid a series of kidnappings in Niger, where armed groups affiliated with ISIL and al-Qaeda have become increasingly active since the military coup in July 2023. Foreign nationals from Switzerland, Austria, Morocco, China, and India have been abducted in recent months, particularly in Agadez and the Tillaberi region.

Niger has relied on Russian mercenaries for security since the withdrawal of U.S. and French forces following the coup. Analysts say the departure of foreign troops has limited monitoring of extremist groups, though local authorities continue to coordinate with international partners.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and no ransom demands have been reported. The case underscores ongoing security risks for foreigners in Niger and the broader West African region.
