Ford is recalling over 694,000 SUVs in the U.S. due to a fuel injector defect that could lead to engine fires, federal regulators announced.

The recall affects specific Bronco Sport models from 2021 through 2024 and Escape models from 2020 through 2022, all equipped with 1.5-liter engines. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fuel injectors in these vehicles may crack, causing gasoline to leak into the engine bay and potentially ignite.

The recall comes after a yearlong NHTSA investigation found that earlier software fixes failed to resolve the root problem. Ford admitted that even previously repaired vehicles are still at risk, with eight engine fires reported.

As an interim solution, Ford will roll out new engine control software that can identify injector cracks, reduce engine power, deactivate the high-pressure fuel pump, and lower engine temperatures to reduce fire risk. The company estimates the total cost of the recall at approximately $570 million.

Ford will begin notifying owners by mail starting August 18. A timeline for permanent repairs has not yet been announced. Owners can call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 25S76, or check the NHTSA website under recall ID 25V-467 for more information.
