Deon Jones: Building a Community for Special Needs Children and Families

On Friday, November 15th, Deon Jones, a special education advocate and educator, shared her inspiring journey behind founding Uniquely Me Creative Arts (UMCA) in an exclusive interview with LittleAfrica News and New York Voice News. Located at Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York, UMCA provides tailored support for children with special needs and their families, focusing on sensory-friendly creative arts and holistic parent support.

Jones, a mother to 17-year-old Elijah, who has Down syndrome and autism, explained that her personal experiences motivated her to launch UMCA in October 2023. “Traveling outside my community for quality services was frustrating,” she said, adding, “I wanted a local space where children could thrive and parents could connect.” Her dual roles as a parent and a seasoned special education professional uniquely position her to bridge these gaps.

UMCA’s programs are centered on sensory-based creative arts, offering activities like making puffy paint for enhanced sensory input. While children engage in these activities, parents benefit from a dedicated family room. Here, they receive support from occupational therapists, behavior specialists, and even guardianship judges, discussing strategies and challenges ranging from medications to managing puberty. “Parents need a break and a safe space to share their experiences,” Jones emphasized.

The organization also prioritizes community bonding through monthly gatherings and inclusive events, such as district fairs. Meeting every second Saturday from 10:00am to 12:00pm at 460 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, UMCA has created a sanctuary for families often overlooked by traditional services. “This community is vulnerable,” Jones explained, “and it’s my joy to provide support in my own neighborhood.”

Looking ahead, Jones envisions expanding UMCA to other boroughs and eventually worldwide. “It’s not about us,” she said, “but ensuring this community continues to receive the support it needs even when we’re no longer here.” Her vision includes making UMCA a lasting resource for special needs children and their families everywhere.

Jones’ dedication reflects the transformative power of community-driven initiatives, demonstrating how one person’s commitment can create a meaningful impact. UMCA stands as a model of inclusive support, fostering growth and connection for children with special needs and their families.
