Governor Hochul Signs Worker-Protection Laws at Labor Day Parade

President Melissa O’Connor noted that the collaboration between retailers, law enforcement, and community leaders led to the development of these new regulations, which aim to protect both employees and consumers. Meanwhile, some groups, like the National Federation of Independent Business, expressed concerns about the impact of these laws on small retailers.

These laws come at a crucial time, as retail workers face increasing safety risks, including incidents of violence and organized theft. The state has also dedicated $40 million to further support these efforts through coordinated law enforcement and stronger penalties for those who assault retail workers.
