A powerful early-season nor’easter is hitting New York and New Jersey this weekend, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerous surf as the storm slowly moves along the Northeast coast.
The National Weather Service says the storm will produce prolonged periods of rain and strong winds, with the greatest coastal flooding expected Saturday and Sunday. Wind advisories cover New York City, Long Island, parts of Westchester and Rockland counties, and much of northeastern New Jersey.
Forecasters are warning of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph in parts of the region, creating the potential for downed trees, power outages and difficult travel. Heavy rainfall could also cause flooding, particularly in urban areas and locations with poor drainage.
The Weather Prediction Center forecasts widespread rainfall along the northern Mid-Atlantic, with some areas potentially receiving 1 to 3 inches Saturday and additional rain Sunday. Coastal communities face an added threat from high tides, storm surge, beach erosion and dangerous rip currents.
New York and New Jersey officials have urged residents to monitor weather alerts, avoid flooded roads and prepare for possible power disruptions as the storm continues through the weekend.
